SARA CAMBENSY
WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE
Born and raised in the U.P., I come from parents who gave me the heart of a union nurse and the mindset of an engineer. Growing up, I worked for my father as a land surveying assistant and traveled with him throughout the Upper Peninsula, spending time in each county.
My public service career began while being employed by the Marquette Public School as the Director of Adult and Community Education (2007-2017). My first appointment was to the city of Marquette Arts and Culture Committee (2006-2007), followed by an appointment to the Marquette Planning Commission (2008-2011). My first elected position was to the Marquette Charter Commission (2011-2012), which led me to run for the Marquette City Commission (2012-2017).
With over 10 years in local office, I understand the financial and infrastructure challenges our local communities face.In 2017, I ran for the 109th district, serving three terms before being term-limited. During my tenure, I passed 9 bills that were signed into law including establishing Michigan’s Mining Future Committee, restoring a Marquette County Judgeship, obtaining a state license for the new Northern Center at NMU, ensured Michigan-made agricultural products could be exported globally during COVID, and updated Michigan’s recycling laws.
I was also able to work in a bipartisan fashion to bring home over $40M in bipartisan enhancement grants with Senator McBroom and Senator Schmidt. Most notable were $10 for the design of the coal dock jetty for the stamp sands in Gay, MI; $20M for the Copper Peak ski jump in Ironwood; $6.3M for Luce County Road Commission to pave And redesign CR 407 that connects to Grand Marais; $3.2M for the Mariucci Beacon House; and $250,000 for the Shiras Planetarium telescope.
I received my B.A. in Education from Northern Michigan University (2002) and my Master’s of Public Administration with a concentration in state and local government (2011). I also hold a Certificate in Fundraising Management from the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University where I helped restore the original Graveraet High School courtyard and fountains back to their original stature.
